Rationale for FMP

This FMP will focus around images produced from a visit to Detroit. Whilst I have in mind a number of themes on which to base this project, I intend to leave much of this open to a degree. This is because the trip will be for a period of three weeks and also because I have never previously visited and I may find that there are certain cultural and visual aspects of the City which immediately impact upon the visitor.

Nevertheless, I am expecting that particular themes will inevitably surface during the visit. For example, it is well known that the car industry has left its mark upon Detroit. The task of the photographer will probably be to capture images of the industries impact. Is may be that there are signs, given the decline of the car industry, of industrial decay and unemployment. In addition, the motor industry attracted considerable migration of different races and cultures which has resulted in a wide range of cultural influences of the City itself. One such influence has been in the area of music with the establishment of Tamla Motown in the City.

The trip to Detroit is an ideal opportunity to take my skills in the direction of capturing soul of a City through visual expression. I see this as taking the form of capturing images which relate to the development and day to day life of the city. This might include images of apartment blocks, places of employment and leisure and people going about their day to day business. An adequate compilation will involve the utilisation and development of my existing technical skills. These include use of colour filters, employment of a range of lenses and techniques which involve capturing panoramic views.
